The Yardbirds are certainly one of the most unstable British rock groups of all time, reflected by the fact that it produced three of the greatest guitarists in history: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. It is mostly because all three started out with the Yardbirds that the group is regarded so highly even though they only had a half-dozen Top 40 hits in 1965-1966: "For Your Love" (#6), "Heart Full of Soul" (#9), "I'm A Man" (#17), "Happening Ten Years Time Ago" (#30), "Over Under Sideways Down" (#13), and "Shapes of Things" (#11). I provide the list to show the shortcomings of this 25 track collection from Repertoire. You get only four of their top six hits and there are several "hits" collections which rectify this problem. True, most of those are multi-disc collections, but we are talking about one of the pivotal rock 'n' roll groups of the Sixties.

What happens when ace blues guitar player John Holiday (aka Kid Memphis) from Memphis who played the acting role of Carl Perkins in the 2005 major motion picture “Walk The Line”, collaborates with JD Taylor, a Jackson, Tennessee native who actually played harmonica on gigs with the Rockabilly legend himself? Well, it’s a story to be told and it’s in the songs of HARD BLUE SPACE w/KID MEMPHIS, the latest Little Boys Blue album to be released by the VizzTone label group.

Loose jam feel offers Sumlin plenty of space. This 1975 set was his first as leader. Quiet and extremely unassuming off the bandstand, Hubert Sumlin played a style of guitar incendiary enough to stand tall beside the immortal Howlin' Wolf. The Wolf was Sumlin's imposing mentor for more than two decades, and it proved a mutually beneficial relationship; Sumlin's twisting, darting, unpredictable lead guitar constantly energized the Wolf's 1960s Chess sides, even when the songs themselves (check out "Do the Do" or "Mama's Baby" for conclusive proof) were less than stellar. Sumlin started out twanging the proverbial broom wire nailed to the wall before he got his mitts on a real guitar. He grew up near West Memphis, Arkansas, briefly hooking up with another Young Lion with a rosy future, harpist James Cotton, before receiving a summons from the mighty Wolf to join him in Chicago in 1954. Sumlin learned his craft nightly on the bandstand behind Wolf, his confidence growing as he graduated from rhythm guitar duties to lead. By the dawn of the '60s, Sumlin's slashing axe was a prominent component on the great majority of Wolf's waxings, including "Wang Dang Doodle," "Shake for Me," "Hidden Charms" (boasting perhaps Sumlin's greatest recorded solo), "Three Hundred Pounds of Joy," and "Killing Floor." Although they had a somewhat tempestuous relationship, Sumlin remained loyal to Wolf until the big man's 1976 death.

It's a long way from Michigan to the West Coast, but Janiva Magness didn't lose a bit of that great Detroit R&B influence when she made the trip. She gained a dedicated, ardent fan base in the L.A. area and she enlisted some of the area's finest for this one. Kirk Fletcher and Kid Ramos tear it up on guitar. Songwriter Jeff Turmes plays bass and contributes some fine songs, particularly the slow smoker "The More I Keep on Losin'." Brother Red Young lays down some greasy B3, especially on the Ray Charles/Percy Mayfield tune "Tell Me How Do You Feel." And Magness is a little powerhouse throughout, just as comfortable shifting from Ruth Brown to James Brown. Fun stuff.

Like many other often forgotten Blues artists of the '20s and '30s, Jones began his recording career in the late '30s, but it wasn't until three decades later that he began to enjoy success in Europe. These recordings are a testament to his many talents. 21 tracks, including previously unreleased takes, are a testament to his talents.

“One of the area’s best harmonica players and musician,” “…the hottest blues band in Jersey,” and “the next generation of the Blues” are some of the most common phrases being used to describe one of North Jersey’s youngest and hardest working band leaders, Vin Mott. Upon witnessing one of his band’s electrifying live shows, it becomes clear what all the buzz is about, and why such accolades as “the one carrying the torch” seems to surround his name.

Tuomari Nurmio is in many ways the quintessential Finnish rock musician. His work draws inspiration from both American roots music and traditional Finnish popular music. His resulting sound transcends either by juxtaposing various styles in unique yet accessible ways. You're as likely to hear klezmer and flamenco as you are Delta blues and rockabilly flavors in his music. His literary lyrics are insightful snapshots of big city bars and streets.

On The Walter Davis Project a diverse collection of Blues Legends pay tribute to the man and his music, including Billy Boy Arnold, Jimmy McCracklin, Charlie Musselwhite, Christian Rannenberg and Keith Dunn, and Henry Townsend with Bob Corritore. The Walter Davis Project album will be treasured by both Blues music lovers and collectors. "To me, Walter Davis's singing, piano playing and lyrics are really deep blues…about as deep as you can get. His lyrics are true blues poetry. His sound has such a deep deep feeling to it. It does what only deep blues can do: it touches your heart and comforts you in a poignant way." – Charlie Musselwhite

This live double album features Coco Montoya and his band on the Road, as part of a RUF records series of on The Road albums delivered from their catalogue of blues artists. The opening track I Got A Mind To Travel, is an apt starting point and introduces us to the full band of musicians Coco Montoya uses to augment his vocal and guitar skills the use of Hammond Organ delivered with panache by Brant Leeper who also adds to the vocals. Throughout the album there are glimpses of Coco Montoya’s exceptional musical career especially the influence he certainly gives the feel of movement and the guitar sound is an homage to his old boss Albert Collins while playing the guitar left-handed and upside down like the other Albert King! Coco’s playing is instinctive full of fluidity. The whole album is easy on your ear and an enjoyable listening experience BUT at times you want Coco to let loose and really show us what he is capable of. On Love Jail his guitar takes on the shape and form of Albert Collins and all the better for it, even his vocals strengthen as the beat picks up, this is a stylish ten minute track. This album has fourteen tracks where Coco and his band just want to please as they play for the length of time need ( Never less than 5 minutes and up to a mighty 15 minutes) to explore all the alleyways and nooks and crannies they feel the music is taking them on their journey of discovery with you, there is freedom of expression that only live music free from the constrains of a studio walls and mixing desk.

Much more than the usual greatest-hits package, Collection is a well-thought-out compilation of the very best tracks of Edgar Winter's career. Obviously, his radio hits are here. "Frankenstein," "Free Ride," and "Hangin' Around" were all staples of mid-'70s AM radio. But Rhino Records doesn't kick this set off with any of the "hits," choosing to rock things up with a track from Edgar Winter's White Trash, "Give It Everything You've Got," before moving into the mellow blues of "Easy Street," highlighted by Winter's jazzy saxophone work. Also included are the excellent antiwar ballad "Dying to Live" and the melodic and catchy "Diamond Eyes" and "Round and Around." All in all, this is a definitive buffet of Winter, but don't let that stop you from sampling the original platters.
