Tony Bianco on drums & compositions with Mike Fletcher on alto sax & flute, Mark Hanslip on tenor sax, Colin Somervell on bass. Tony Bianco is a great drummer who has worked with Paul Dunmall, Dave Liebman and Elton Dean on some two dozen discs. Mr. Bianco does have another quartet disc out on the 33Jazz label but it has completely different personnel. I don't know much about the other members of this quartet although Mr. Hanslip and Somervell can be found on a few other discs for the FMR label. Bianco does mention in the liner notes that he first met these men as students when doing a workshop at the Birmingham Conservatory. He also says that this quartet was inspired a certain Elvin Jones band which featured two saxists: Dave Liebman and Steve Grossman.

Over the years, Aki Takase und David Murray have amassed respective bodies of soul-stirring compositions, of which several pieces related to the rites of passage of middle age are included on Cherry – Sakura, making this a markedly different conversation than before – and one that is more profound. Cherry – Sakura presents an unsparing conversation about the defining issues of later life by two artists who have seen it all at least once. To use outdated jazz parlance deserving of resuscitation, Takase and Murray are saying something with this album: in a phrase – ripeness is all.

If proof is ever needed that there are too many Chet Baker albums around, this album can serve as evidence. Baker is caught on an off day; his playing during the first chorus of the opening "Long Ago And Far Away" is so flawed that one wonders why the musicians did not stop and try a second version. …

A duet performance between pianist Marilyn Crispell and clarinetist David Rothenberg offers nebulous mystery and thematic, ECM-style theatrical contexts you should expect from longtime veterans of creative improvised music. The liquid piano sound of Crispell and the pithy, earthy, throat tones of Rothenberg's bass clarinet in the main shapeshift back and forth during this mercurial program of deep blue, darkest night, after-hours modern jazz.

The producer and concert organizer Ulli Blodel, founder of the Jazzwerkstatt house, remembers the great American pianist who recently died: «Cecil Taylor, who died on April 5, 2018 in his Brooklyn, had a style that distinguished him from any other musician. With Ornette Coleman (1930-2015) in the 60s he began to develop a music dominated by the staccato and the cluster that later we would have known by the name of free jazz. This piano icon always began his concerts softly, slipping to the instrument, muttering the lyrics to himself, almost dancing, until the full force of his style made the unique power of music resonate.

By the time of his Paris concert, Cecil Taylor's quartet had reached a particularly high level of musical communication. Not only did altoist Jimmy Lyons (whose sound but not choice of notes was sometimes close to Charlie Parker's) find a place for himself in the dense ensembles, but one can hear him and the pianist/leader echoing each other's phrases in spots.

Digitally remastered from the original stereo master tapes. This is the 1st take of the piece (Edition II). By accident Bob Thiele put out the wrong take. After he went through the initial press run, he switched the masters to the other take and inscribed Edition II on the inside of the runout circle. So there are really two versions of Ascension.

Currently in the midst of an unprecedented mid-career renaissance, wildly prolific tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman has been recording for Leo Records at a frantic pace, typically issuing several new albums at a time. Released concurrently with The Edge and The Art of the Duet, Volume One is Serendipity, a title that bears out its namesake. Taped in the winter of 2011 during what was originally intended to be the session for The Foreign Legion, a bass-less trio date with Perelman's regular collaborators pianist Matthew Shipp and drummer Gerald Cleaver, this unplanned quartet effort with legendary bassist William Parker is a truly serendipitous affair.

Boasting a rich, full-bodied sound, this release finds tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman with drummer Rashid Ali and bassist William Parker on a set of ten originals. Perelman is a powerfully free spirit whose focused performances energize, propel, and invigorate. He is best when he hooks onto a melody and thrashes it, making it his own, or when he exults in the richness of his sound. Ali and Parker are good partners for Perelman, each knowing well the music of ecstasy. Ali, of course, backed John Coltrane in his later period, and Parker is at the forefront of the new avant-garde. Sad Life is dedicated to Perelman's father, though the music displayed on this disc is rarely sad. It expresses a range of emotions, but rarely lessens its intensity. Perelman may squawk through his mouthpiece on "Sad Life," or sport advanced techniques on "Life Forms," or even add a march-like gait on "Alagoana." Whatever Perelman blows is done with passion, and there is plenty of that throughout this CD.

Reissue with latest 2014 DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. This four-part suite is actually a film soundtrack to the debut feature by Conrad Rooks, though it was never used as such. Recorded in 1965, it was performed by the Ornette Coleman Trio with Charles Moffett on drums and David Izenson on bass; augmenting the session were Pharoah Sanders on tenor and a large studio orchestra arranged by Joseph Tekula. What is most notable is the kind of control Coleman has over the orchestra. His trio is playing by intuition, which was normal for them, but they open to accommodate the more formal constructs of a band who knows little about improvisation and how it works in the free jazz context.

On Con Fluent, the two are a virtual duo. Grew sent a recording of a few improvised sets to Watts to play over. The results are sublime and had the information about the overdubbing approach not been revealed, one probably would not have expected it. For example, 'Sadness of Rhyme' is a complex dance, with deep pockets of silence and delicate interactions that feel spontaneously exacted with no deference to the time and space between them. Another track, 'The Lit and Phil Chair' begins with a powerful burst of saxophone over low scrapings of the piano's strings. On 'Ask Later' it all comes together as the clever 'composition' from Grew swirls together with Watt's saxophone in a a 15-minute mini-epic that ranges from introspective to exuberant.

"This is arguably Keith Tippett's most accessible and consistently excellent recording for many years. It benefits from several instantly and hauntingly memorable tunes, universally superb perfomances all round and the brief penultimate track is adorned by Julie Tippett's irresistible vocals. Very highly recommended and probably gets my vote for new album of the year. You may think the above somewhat hyperbolic, but I assure you it ain't." - RogerF, Organissimo
